“The water was cold and the beach still a hundred yards away. The
bullets tore holes in the water around me...” -Robert Capa
As dramatized in
HBO’s Band of Brothers WWII series, D-Day, June 6 1944,
was the day that the Allied Forces stormed the beaches of Normandy in France. Hundreds of men did not even make it past the
beach as they were pelted with shells and machine gun fire from established
German posts. Nearly 2500 Americans lost their lives on this day. It is a day to remember,
not just for the historical significance of being a turning point in the war,
but also for those who lost their lives and those that fought. The “D” in D-day stands for Day in military parlance. Yes, it is Day-Day, or the day of action.
