#fridayreads: Amelia Earhart

On August 24-25, 1932 Amelia Earhart made the first solo, nonstop flight by a woman across the United States. Even more miraculously, before boarding her airplane she didn't have to take off her shoes or walk through a metal detector. These days one can hear people younger than Earhart droning on about flightless birds on the lawn, but Amelia was too busy to look anywhere but at the horizon. She flew from Los Angeles to Newark with an average speed of 128 miles per hour. If you would like to check out books about Earhart and other early aviation pioneers, Jessup Library gives you permission to land. We won't make you take off your shoes before entering the library, and you're free to bring in food and drinks.
