ports.  Why read about them when you can watch them?  Because behind every sport, every athlete, every team, in every major event there are the stories of the people who experienced the reality of what occurs when we are not watching.

Image result for dance picturesThere are stories—from men who broke barriers in their respective sport (see Jackie Robinson’s I Never Had it Made), to game-fixing (see The Betrayal about the 1919 World Series), and the devastating and unexpected consequences of concussions and injuries (see Concussion and Jay William’s Life is not an Accident).  These are not all just about sports, but about people, about the struggles of an African American man to be the first to play baseball on an integrated major league team, or teammates who were offered a fortune for throwing the series and made sure they got their payout by losing one of the most prestigious titles in sports:  The World Series.  Books on sports are about people who cheat, who gamble, who win, who lose, who rally, and who fall, and the sacrifices that they and their families must make daily to succeed.
