he Native American Monacan nation that resided, and still resides, in central Virginia, including Charlottesville, primarily lived by rivers and had a staple diet of maize (ancient corn).  This dietary essential was discovered through the scientific examination of isotopes from ancient skeletal remains that, with the blessing of the Monacans, were exhumed from burial mounds.
