Flattened trees from Tunguska event. |
Asteroid Day falls on June 30 every year to mark the anniversary of the Tunguska asteroid event that happened in Siberia 1908. It is the single largest asteroid event that has happened in modern history and fortunately for the modern world, it happened in an unpopulated area. The explosion is thought to have flattened an approximate 80 million trees and the asteroid itself could have been as tall as the Empire State Building. In order to bring awareness to asteroids, several scientists including Stephen Hawking and Brian May brought about Asteroid Day.
This initiative works to explore asteroids, how they shape the solar system, delve into how they operate and ultimately how to protect Earth from any impacts that may occur in the future.
