Are you a Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, or Slytherin? Would you rather be hit by a bludger during a Quidditch match or get pranked by Peeves? How do you say “Wingardium Leviosa?” Do you dream of drinking a butterbeer at the Three Broomsticks or hanging with your S.P.E.W. friends in the common room knitting hats for House Elves?  If these questions, or even words, make sense to you – you are one of millions of people around the world who have enjoyed the adventures of Harry Potter!

Today, on what would be his 40th birthday, we celebrate Harry Potter and the series that defined a generation and continues to inspire and excite many the world over. Thanks to the Boy Who Lived, and his creator, J.K. Rowling, a large population of the world understands and even defines themselves with the made-up words, ideas, and themes of this fun, fantasy series that was dreamed up on a delayed train. What started as a 7 book series cataloguing the schooling and adventures of Mr. Potter, has turned into a world-wide phenomenon leading to movies, prequels, in-depth writings and fan theories, amusement parks, recipes, home décor, tattoos and more. Readers have disliked and then found empathy for the “perfectly normal, thank you very much” Dursleys, lined up outside bookstores at midnight to buy the books the moment they were released, and found new meaning in the word “Always.” We have laughed, cried, and sometimes truly believed, or wished, we were at Hogwarts with Harry, Hermione, and Ron.

So, whether you’re an interested muggle or a full blown Potter-head, take some time to enjoy the magical world of Harry Potter today!
