#fridayreads: Disney Studios

Walt Disney Studios was founded on October 16, 1923. The first animated film involved a poisoned apple, a wicked stepmother, seven dwarfs, and a free trip to a galaxy far, far away. Hold on, we're getting ahead of ourselves here -- it wasn't until decades later that Disney Studios acquired Lucasfilm and a little-known franchise called Star Wars.

But now back to Disney... put on your mouse ears and listen up! We have some treats for you that don't include poisoned fruit or wee little men. Disney's Land is about the amusement park associated with the film studio. We have it in print and an electronic version. Good Girls and Wicked Witches is an electronic book about the changing way that Disney heroines are portrayed from 1937-2001.  Handsome Heroes and Vile Villains is a electronic book companion volume that looks at the portrayal of male characters in Disney films. The Disney Version: the life, times, art and commerce of Walt Disney explores the man behind the studio (spoiler: it's not Darth Vader). Be Our Guest: perfecting the art of customer service examines how Disney has set the standard in customer service, although some of us are still waiting for enchanted mice to serve us tea. Hollywood Cartoons showcases Disney cartoons and its rivals, and Walt Disney: a biography is probably not about a guy named Bob Smith. However, one should never guess when doing research so please ask us for help with research and citations.
