Valentine's Day!

Valentine's Day started long ago in Roman times with a pagan fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the god of agriculture. It was not until the fifth century that Pope Gelasius declared February 14 Saint Valentine's Day, and still later in the 18th century that exchanging letters that would evolve into what we recognize today as our day of exchanging tokens of affection.

Flowers, chocolate, presents and notes of affection, all have evolved from one festival thousands of years old! Like the thread of connection that spans the ages of the history of St. Valentine's Day, we hope that you will find someone to connect with this Valentine's Day!

Happy Valentine's Day from Jessup Library!
