New Books in the Library
Jessup Library has over 100 new books on the New Books shelf. If you are done with summer you might want to investigate The Arctic : what everyone needs to know (spoiler: it's cold and sometimes it's dark). Could you make do without mosquitoes? Buzz, Sting, Bite: why we need insects claims just what the title says, although some of us are skeptical. What we DO need is an answer to The Mystery of the Exploding Teeth : and other curiosities from the history of medicine. Maybe those exploding teeth were involved in a law of physics. Want to know more? Have a look at All of Physics (almost) in 15 equations.
It's no secret that things cost more than they used to and wages have not kept pace. The Sum of Small Things : a theory of the aspirational class, The Velvet Rope Economy : how inequality became big business, The Debt Delusion : living within our means and other fallacies, and The Decadent Society : how we became the victims of our own success all have interesting theories. And speaking of interesting, if you are interested in the past, may we recommend Hippie Food : how back-to-the-landers, longhairs, and revolutionaries changed the way we eat. You can read it while drinking an organic kale smoothie!
And finally, if the past few years have seemed like something out of a Twilight Zone episode, politically, socially, and culturally, Rod Serling : his life, work and imagination might be a pleasant escape. Here's looking forward to better times as we start a new academic year at PVCC!
