Banned Books Week
Why do books get banned? A few reasons are offensive language, sexuality, LBGTQ+, racism, inappropriate for age group, politics, violence, and witchcraft. Many books that end up on the challenged and banned list are by virtue made to provoke thought about difficult issues and subjects that are relevant in the world.
By reading a book that stimulates the reader, whether they are six years old or sixteen years old, these so-called scary books throw light on exactly the issue that the author is often trying to highlight, and sometimes a book is taken a little too seriously when it is meant to just be entertainment.
Our library is overflowing with challenged and banned books that might surprise you, such as James and the Giant Peach (banned for alcohol, drugs, violence, and suspicious behavior) and Lois Lowry's The Giver (banned for violence and being unsuitable for age group). Other banned books we carry include, but are not limited to Persepolis, Eleanor & Park, The Great Gatsby, Thirteen Reasons Why, and The Handmaid's Tale.
