👑Women's History Month

Did you know that women could not get a credit card until 1974? Or that in the workplace, on average women make 83 cents to a man's dollar? Or that women did not get the right to vote in America until a hundred years ago in 1920? As a society, we have fought hard for equality for women, but as the numbers show--we still have battles to fight for the future.

At Jessup Library we are celebrating Women's History Month this March with books on feminism, books about women, and books written by women authors. Delve into the state of women in the world today in The Women's Atlas, with direct statistics displayed in a readable and visually striking way, on subjects such as marriage, sports, health and work. The book The Trouble With White Women: A Counterhistory of Feminism unveils the way in which the disenfranchised were split between the mainstream and the marginalized and how the marginalized pushed back.

For fictional stories that explore the stories of women, we recommend the graphic novel of the classic The Handmaid's Tale, or the prequel to Alice Hoffman's Practical Magic, Magic Lessons. Another wonderful woman-central book is Jane Austen's Emma, about a spoiled girl who tries to be matchmaker and fails miserably. Other books we have are by Maya Angelou, Charlotte Bronte, Louise Erdrich, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, and Tracy Chevalier!

Happy Reading!📖
