Black History Month✨
Black History Month is a moment for reflection on the past, and at the same time a time for celebrating wonderful Black authors, stories and histories. This February we are looking at the past, present, and future of Black authorship and history.
In a twist on the classic Little Women, Bethany C. Morrow's novel So Many Beginnings: A Little Women Remix, this clever book uses the core story of four sisters trying to find their way in the world, but this time they are African American young women in a colony of freed people during the Civil War. The sweet story can give a new perspective on the Civil War and the tolls and opportunities it provided for different kinds of people. If you prefer a more contemporary story, check out Angie Thomas's The Hate U Give, a new classic that follows the story of young woman who is witness to a violent crime against her friend, and the consequences that she must deal with after this unlawful act.
In the nonfiction section, bell hooks's Killing Rage: Ending Racism is a collection of essays by the feted author that focuses on racism from a Black feminist's perspective. Or, you could delve into the third book of the continuation of Maya Angelou's autobiography Singin' and Swingin' and Gettin' Merry Like Christmas, which follows her through her career as a performer touring through Europe and the guilt she feels for not being with her son at the same time.
There are so many more books to enjoy and to learn from that will be on display for the whole month of February at Jessup Library. Please come on by and check them out!
Happy Reading! 📖
